After beating him at the Tournament of Champions in January, Diego Elias has once again got the better of Marwan ElShorbagy, this time in Detroit.
The pair were battling it out for a place in the final of the Suburban Collection Motor City Open, but it turned into an easy victory for the Peruvian Puma.
It took just half an hour for Elias to beat the No.1 seed ElShorbagy, and advance through to his second final in his last four tournaments.
“I was moving really well and I’m happy with how I played. I’m looking forward to the finals,” Elias said.
“The first game was really important. I got the lead and I could finish the game. It was really mental, and I was mentally really strong today and felt really good.”
The South American will meet another Egyptian in the final, as Mohamed Abouelghar overcame the surprise of the week, Zahed Salem.
Mohamed Abouelghar (r) in action against compatriot Zahed Salem
Salem had already beaten the No.2 seed Miguel Rodriguez, and the No.8 seed Nicolas Mueller in quarter finals and second round, respectively.
Reaching the final would be a step too far, though, as World No.9 Abouelghar came through against his compatriot in four, winning 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9.
“It’s hard to play against a friend,” Abouelghar said. “I’m sure we’re going to have many more battles in the future, I’m just happy I got through this one. And hopefully next time we can have a great match also.”
“I knew he had tough matches and it was probably getting to him. The way I dealt with it, I think was good. I didn’t panic in the end.”
With Abouelghar taking victory in his semi final, it means the final will be contested by two men in the top ten in the world rankings.
