Egypt’s World No.2s Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini have been named the men’s and women’s PSA Players of the Month, respectively, for January.
Farag claimed his first J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions title last month after he defeated World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy in a thrilling 3-2 final.
The Egyptian came from 2-0 down to defeat his compatriot inside New York’s iconic Grand Central Terminal and win 10-12, 6-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-8 in 84 minutes. The title is Farag’s third of the season after he has reached the final of every tournament this season, apart from the U.S. Open in October last year.
The victory also means that Farag will claim the World No.1 spot in March’s World Rankings. ElShorbagy’s Windy City Open points – which he won – will expire at the end of February meaning that Farag will boast a higher points average.
Meanwhile, Nour El Sherbini made history as she secured her third Tournament of Champions title, beating World No.1 Raneem El Welily in straight-games in the final.
The win means that El Sherbini is the first woman ever to win the New York tournament on three occasions after a dominant 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 victory to successfully defend her title.
El Sherbini and El Welily were meeting for the first time since the latter had ended the former’s 31-month reign at World No.1 last month and El Welily – the 2015 Tournament of Champions winner – came into the match with a narrow 10-9 lead on their head-to-head record.
But things went El Sherbini’s way this time around as the 23-year-old put on a masterclass of attacking squash to lift her 18th career PSA title.
The title marks El Sherbini’s first of the season and means that she now qualifies for the season-ending PSA World Tour Finals.
