Iker Pajares Bernabeu in action

Wimbledon Open: Bernabeu Scalps Mosaad to Reach Last Eight

Spain’s World No.58 Iker Pajares Bernabeu sent No.2 seed Omar Mosaad crashing out of the Wimbledon Club Squash Squared Open at the second round stage after prevailing in a gladiatorial 99-minute battle on day three of the PSA World Tour Bronze tournament.

Bernabeu and Mosaad had met last month at the El Gouna International, with former World No.3 Mosaad winning a five-game battle after 73 minutes of intense action.

This time the match went the way of Bernabeu as he got the better of World No.11 Mosaad in an attritional match, winning 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 4-11, 11-7 to claim the biggest win of his career.

Bernabeu will line up against World No.20 Daryl Selby for a place in the semi-finals, with Selby overcoming fellow Englishman George Parker 16-14, 3-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9 in an encounter totalling 93 minutes.

Another all-English battle – starring former World No.1 James Willstrop and World No.40 Chris Simpson – also went all the way to five games, with the former taking it 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6 to advance to the next round.

Willstrop, the 2016 champion, will play Lucas Serme in the quarter-finals. Serme beat England’s Ben Coleman 3-0 in the only match of the day not to go the distance.
