Along with the Growthpoint S.A. Open, World Championship qualifying spots were available at the MTC Squash Russian Open in Moscow this week.
Both No.1 seeds made their respective finals, but both were upset in their clashes, as Austria’s Aqeel Rehman and Reeham Sedky of the United States took the victories.
Sedky took the victory in the women’s event by beating Finland’s Emilia Soini, who was appearing in a final for the first time in three seasons.
The American took full control of the match, needing just over half an hour to secure the title, her third successive crown on the PSA World Tour, after victories at the Queen City Open and Richmond Open earlier this year.
Sedky dropped just ten points in the final against Soini, winning out 11-0, 11-4, 11-6 to take the title, and to book her spot in the CIB PSA Women’s World Championship 2019-2020, what will be her first event in the sport’s biggest tournament.
In the men’s final, Austria’s Aqeel Rehman also overcame the No.1 seed, who also happened to be Finnish. He defeated Henrik Mustonen in four games to lift the trophy.
Rehman took his first title of the calendar year with the win, as he won out in a tough battle against the Finn, who had also been looking for his first win of 2019.
The Austrian won the first game 11-7, but Mustonen came fighting back to win the second to tie the match. However, Rehman won the next two games to win it 3-1, booking his place in Qatar for the PSA Men’s World Championship 2019-2020.
