Women's Worlds: El Sherbini Beats El Welily to win Fourth World Championship

Egypt's World No.4 Nour El Sherbini has retained her PSA World Championship title after displaying a masterclass performance to beat World No.1 Raneem El Welily in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The last time the two players faced each other in front of the Pyramids it was El Welily who claimed the victory, however, El Sherbini made sure she avenged that defeat as she powered past the World No.1 to lift her fourth World Championship title.

El Sherbini, who was celebrating her 24th birthday today, got off to the best possible start as she raced into an 8-0 lead, leaving El Welily struggling to find her way into the game as the occasion looked to have got the better of her.

Cairo-based El Welily was able to find her groove in the second game as she began to rattle off the points to test the movement of El Sherbini and eventually draw level.

The comeback didn’t last long for El Welily though, as El Sherbini soon showed that she was back to full fitness after struggling with a knee injury at the start of the season which has kept her out of action as she took full advantage of seven unforced errors from the racket of her opponent to take the third.

The fourth game proved to be straightforward for former World No.1 El Sherbini as she continued to hit all of her targets with clean precision to become the youngest female player to win four World Championship titles.

“The last couple of months for me have been really hard,” said El Sherbini afterwards.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do and almost didn’t play any tournament, but I took the risk and took the decision that I wanted to play this tournament badly and I wanted to come and try. I was getting better every match and I’m very grateful and happy to be standing here right now.

“I missed playing with all the top players and especially Raneem. She is closest to my heart and it’s very hard to play her mentally and emotionally but we try to leave the emotions and focus on squash once we get inside the court.

“I think because today is my birthday I was making sure not to be sad. I was very relaxed and it took a lot of pressure off thinking about the messages and not focusing on the match.

“We are very happy to have this tournament back and playing in front of the Pyramids was always a dream of mine.

“I would really like to thank I-Events, Amr Mansi and his team and especially CIB for hosting and helping the women’s game get bigger and giving the women the chance to have a prize money bigger than the men’s. It is a big risk and hopefully we deserved that and played matches that were worthy of that. All of the players are very grateful.”
