2015 World Championship Omar Mosaad booked his place in the next round of the PSA Men’s World Championship after downing local player Syed Azlan Amjad just two days after the Qatari was hospitalised due to an injury in his first round fixture.
Amjad progressed to the last 32 in bizarre circumstances after his round one opponent, Iker Pajares Bernabeu, caught him in the groin when the Spaniard attempted to hit the ball back to himself off the front wall, resulting in the match being awarded to Amjad due to it being an opponent-inflicted injury.
Despite requiring hospital treatment for the injury, Amjad was able to return to court for his clash with former World No.3 Mosaad and stayed in the rallies well against ‘The Hammer of Thor’ in the opening game.
But Mosaad always maintained a measure of control and was rarely troubled as he completed an 11-5, 11-2, 11-6 victory to reach round three at this tournament for the first time since his run to the final in Bellevue four years ago.
“Every match in this tournament is very important, it doesn’t matter who you are playing, you have to put in 100 per cent in every match,” Mosaad said.
“It was a challenge for me because it was the first time I played him, but I’m really happy that I focused today, started well and won this match.
“Last year I was playing here with Adrian Waller and I lost 3-0. After this match I changed my training, I went back to my old team and I think they did a really good job in the summer. I didn’t play well at my first three tournaments, I played with Ali Farag in the last tournament, so I didn’t have a chance to play my good squash.
“In this tournament I started in the first round really well and I’m really happy and looking forward for more. It’s amazing to be here, they’re really good facilities, the squash courts, hotel, everything. I’m really happy to play in front of this amazing crowd and I will work 100 per cent in the next match.”
Mosaad will play the winner of current World No.5 Paul Coll and former World No.5 Borja Golan, who go head-to-head later today.
