Year in Review: Matches of the Season – Part One

The PSA Tour was home to some thrilling action during 2019, with the world’s best players contesting a series of incredible matches at tournament’s in all four corners of the globe.

We’ve picked out some of the best matches from the past 12 months for squash fans to relive and enjoy.

January 2019 – Tournament of Champions: Mohamed ElShorbagy v Diego Elias

Egypt’s then-World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy was pushed all the way to five games in this titanic battle with Peruvian Diego Elias under the chandelliers of Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall.

Elias twice took a one-game lead, but was pegged back both times by a resurgent ElShorbagy and fell just short in the deciding fifth game as fatigue took its toll.

February 2019 – PSA World Championships: Nour El Tayeb v Raneem El Welily

Egypt’s then-World No.3 Nour El Tayeb conquered compatriot and defending champion Raneem El Welily to reach her first World Championship final back in February, in what was crowned the women’s Match of the Season at the PSA Awards in June.

The two leading female athletes played out a match worthy of the final as they pushed each other to the limit in a gladiatorial five-game battle.

May 2019 – Allam British Open: Miguel Rodriguez v Cesar Salazar

Defending champion Miguel Rodriguez faced a tough battle in round three of the Allam British Open as he came up against Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in this spectacular battle in Hull.

Both players brought the crowd into rapturous applause on numerous occasions with their dynamic display in one of the most entertaining matches of last season.

April 2019 – DPD Open: Raneem El Welily v Nour El Sherbini

World No.1 Raneem El Welily found herself staring down the barrel of defeat in the final of the inaugural DPD Open as she went 2-0 down to World No.2 Nour El Sherbini.

El Welily had gone to five-games in all of her previous matches in Eindhoven throughout the week and was forced to again in the final of the PSA World Tour Gold event as she showcased some incredible skill to take the win and the title.

May 2019 – Allam British Open: Ali Farag v Paul Coll

World No.1 Ali Farag and ‘Superman’ Paul Coll came together in this thriller – which was named men’s Match of the Season at the PSA Awards – at the British Open to see who would reach the final of the sport’s oldest tournament.
