World No.2 Nour El Sherbini got her title defence off to the best start at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions after she defeated Netherlands’ Milou van der Heijden in straight-games in New York.
El Sherbini made her first appearance of the season in November at the PSA World Championship where she went on to lift her fourth World Championship title and the Egyptian showed she had not taken her foot off the gas as she claimed the first game against van der Heijden by an 11-4 scoreline.
The second proved to be a closer contested game with van der Heijden giving a good account of herself against the former World No.1 before El Sherbini safely navigated a two-game advantage before closing out an 11-4, 11-8, 11-4 win.
El Sherbini will face USA favourite Olivia Blatchford Clyne for a place in the quarter finals.
“It was a good first round for me, I have never played Milou before and it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen,” said El Sherbini.
“It’s the first match of the tournament, but I was trying to be ready and just to get back into tournament mode. It’s the second tournament for me and I’m really happy with the first round.
“I was happy that we had a bit of a break after the Worlds, so I just tried to recover well and train hard.”
