There were no upsets in the last eight of the Carol Weymuller Open, as the top four seeds made it through to the semi-finals of the PSA World Tour Bronze event in Brooklyn, New York.
All four won in straight games on Saturday afternoon at the Heights Casino, starting with World No.3, and the tournament’s top seed, Nouran Gohar. She got the better of Donna Lobban in their quarter-final clash.
The Australian had already caused two big upsets over the course of the opening two days of the event, but she had no answer for the hard-hitting Egyptian, who took the win in just 26 minutes, winning 11-3, 11-8, 11-6.
She will face Frenchwoman Camille Serme in the last four of this event, with the newly crowned J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions winner getting the better of Egypt’s Salma Hany on Saturday.
After suffering a cut lip in her second round match, and having to leave the venue for treatment on Friday evening, New Zealand’s Joelle King showed her fighting spirit to win in straight games in her quarter final match against Mariam Metwally.
The Egyptian had caused a shock on the third day of the event when she beat Joshna Chinappa, but the World No.6 dispatched the 23-year-old in just half an hour, winning 11-8, 11-5, 11-7.
The Kiwi will now face another Egyptian in the semi-finals, in No.2 seed, and defending Carol Weymuller Open champion, Nour El Tayeb. She got the better of Low Wee Wern, who herself was also coming off a big win on Friday evening.
The Malaysian No.1 downed home favourite Amanda Sobhy in the second round, but El Tayeb was too strong for her in their last eight clash, taking the victory in 33 minutes to advance to the semi-finals once again.
