Cleveland Classic: Blatchford Clyne Axes Lust to Reach Quarters

United States No.2 Olivia Blatchford Clyne booked her place in the quarter-finals of the Cleveland Classic, PSA World Tour Bronze tournament after downing No.8 eight seed Victoria Lust in straight games at the Cleveland Racquet Club.

Lust had won all four of their previous matches on the PSA Tour, but it was all about Blatchford Clyne this time around as the 27-year-old from New York completed an 11-7, 12-10, 11-7 victory in 29 minutes.

Lust will play No.2 seed Joelle King for a place in the semi-finals, with King coming through to beat Canada’s Hollie Naughton 3-0, winning 11-5, 11-7, 11-4.

The winner of that quarter-final clash will play an Englishwoman in the last four, with No.3 seed Sarah-Jane Perry and No.6 seed Alison Waters beating Egyptian duo Menna Hamed and Mayar Hany, respectively to book their quarter-final berths.

On the top half of the draw, No.1 seed Nour El Tayeb came back from 2-1 down to edge World No.30 Sabrina Sobhy. With three PSA Challenger Tour titles in as many months – in addition to two successive PSA Player of the Month awards – Sobhy has made significant strides up the World Rankings and showcased her considerable talent against the World No.5, who recovered from a 15 minute injury break to sneak the win.

El Tayeb’s triumph will pit her against fellow Egyptian Farida Mohamed next after she upset No.7 seed Salma Hany, while Hong Kong’s Annie Au and Joshna Chinappa will contest the final quarter-final fixture. Au beat Nadine Shahin in straight games, while Chinappa progressed to the last eight after her second round opponent, Menna Nasser, retired through injury after a highly competitive first game.

The quarter-finals begin at 14:00 local time (GMT-5) today and you can follow the live scores from the event here.

There will also be live streaming. Follow the action from court one and court two.
