Sebastian Bonmalais in action at the Motor City Open

Motor City Open: Bonmalais & Aubert Take Surprise First Round Wins

The French duo of Sebastian Bonmalais and Benjamin Aubert both got the better of higher-ranked opponents to advance to the second round of the Motor City Open in Bloomfield Hills, Detroit.

Bonmalais, the World No.71, overcame Arturo Salazar in his first round clash at the PSA World Tour Silver event, despite losing the first game on a lengthy tiebreak, which the Mexican eventually took 17-15.

From there, the Frenchman was in complete control for the next two games, and even went on a run of winning 18 straight points on his way to a 2-1. Bonmalais then won the fourth game on a tie-break to secure his place in the last 16 in Bloomfield Hills, where he will face the Mexican’s twin brother Cesar on Thursday evening.

Along with Bonmalais, fellow Frenchman Benjamin Aubert also tasted success on the opening day of the tournament, as he got the better of Ramit Tandon, restricting the higher-ranked Indian to just ten points across the entire match.

The World No.67 took the victory in 45 minutes, winning out 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 to advance through to the second round, where he will take on the tournament’s No.6 seed, Egypt’s Zahed Salem.

Elsewhere, there was a hat-trick of wins for English players, as Nathan Lake, George Parker and Richie Fallows all won their first round clashes, with the latter two both knocking out American opponents, in Todd Harrity and Chris Hanson, respectively.

Lake got the better of India’s Aditya Jagtap, while Shahjahan Khan, the third American in the draw, also tasted defeat, losing out to the other Indian in the tournament, Vikram Malhotra.

Qatari No.1 Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi and Egypt’s Mohamed ElSherbini also took victories on the opening day in Bloomfield Hills, advancing through to the second round, where the seeded players enter the draw.

The likes of defending champion Mohamed Abouelghar, fellow Egyptian Marwan ElShorbagy and the South American duo of Diego Elias and Miguel Rodriguez will all start their campaigns in the second round.

The action continues at the Motor City Open on Thursday evening, with all eight matches of the second round taking place. You can keep up with live scores from the event here.
