Defending champion and World No.9 Mohamed Abouelghar suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Qatar’s World No.37 Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi in the second round of the Motor City Open taking place in Detroit.
The two players had not faced each other since 2014, when Abouelghar claimed a comfortable straight-games victory. However, the Qatari player produced a huge performance to come from one-game down against the No.3 seed and claim a 9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7 victory in 59 minutes.
“I have massive, massive respect for this guy,” Al Tamimi said. “He’s one of the nicest guys on tour and most skilful, so I always like to play those people. It’s always fair and he’s one of my favourite players on tour.
“I think the hard work paid off, and I kept pushing and pushing until the fifth.”
Tamimi will face France’s Benjamin Aubert in the quarter finals after he produced his own upset to take out No.6 seed Zahed Salem on the second day of action at the PSA World Tour Silver event. While Mohamed ElSherbini downed France’s No.5 seed Gregoire Marche in straight-games to set up a last eight battle with Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez.
Two former champions in the form of Marwan ElShorbagy and Rodriguez also both advanced. ElShorbagy took out England’s George Parker in four games to set up a quarter final clash with Hong Kong’s Leo Au.
“The first match of the tournament is always one of the toughest,” ElShorbagy said. “George is a great player, it wasn’t really easy playing him. He’s a big guy and you have to find a way to move around.”
For 2015 champion Rodriguez it is his first PSA tournament since the PSA Men’s World Championship in Qatar.
“This is a test for me,” Rodriguez said. “I’m glad I was able to play without pain. It was a great performance, and I’m very happy to be back on tour.”
Elsewhere, top seed Peru’s Diego Elias was pushed all the way by England’s Nathan Lake in a thrilling five-game battle.
“I’ve done well most of the time,” Elias said. “The people here are great, and I’m really happy to be here again. There are some good players in the tournament, so I have to stay at my best to try to win.”
Elias will take on Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in the next round after he defeated France’s Sebastien Bonmalais in five-games to advance.
The action continues at the Motor City Open on Friday evening, with the quarter finals taking place. You can keep up with live scores from the event here.
