Peru’s World No.7 Diego Elias is the 2020 Motor City Open champion after defeating unseeded Egyptian Mohamed ElSherbini in straight games in the final at the Birmingham Athletic Club in Bloomfield Hills, Detroit.
It was the ‘Peruvian Puma’s’ second trip to the final of the PSA World Tour Silver event, having lost out in an epic five-game battle with Egypt’s Mohamed Abouelghar in the final.
This year, Elias needed to go to five games only once on his run to the title, defeating England’s Nathan Lake in a decider in the second round, his opening match of the tournament. After that, he won his remaining three matches in straight games.
“I’ve been here so many times,” Elias said. “I’m just really happy and I think I played my best squash this week and I’m happy with the result.”
“You saw the upsets this week,” Elias said. “They are all playing really, really good. The level of the 40th in the world is getting closer and closer to the level of the top guys.”
The Peruvian faced just one seeded player throughout the tournament, when he defeated No.8 seed Cesar Salazar in the quarter-finals. He then faced the unseeded Frenchman Benjamin Aubert in the semis, before downing ElSherbini in the final.
The Egyptian had gotten the better of three seeded players en route to the final, including World No.10 Miguel Rodriguez. He had also downed No.5 seed Gregoire Marche in the second round, before then overcoming the Colombian in the last eight. ElSherbini then beat Hong Kong’s Leo Au to reach the final.
