Four time World Champion Nour El Sherbini eased her way into the semi-finals of the CIB Black Ball Squash Open for the second year running after she defeated unseeded Coline Aumard of France in straight-games.
Aumard, who was featuring in her first Platinum quarter final, was unable to prevent the charge of an in-form El Sherbini, who showed no signs of losing any momentum from her Windy City Open victory last week as she powered to an 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 victory.
The Egyptian World No.4 took a close first game, with Aumard showing her speed to retrieve a lot of balls but ultimately it was the accuracy and class of El Sherbini that shined through on her way to a straight-games victory.
The reigning World Champion will face either World No.1 Raneem El Welily or World No.5 Nour El Tayeb in the next round depending on who reigns victorious in their encounter later today.
“Coline has been playing really well this tournament and has taken out two of the top Egyptian players,” said El Sherbini.
“I was just trying to play my game and she has was just coming back strong every game, so I’m really pleased to be in the semi-finals.
“It’s my fourth tournament and making it through to the semi-finals is really big for me and I’m really happy with my performance.
“It’s really hard mentally and physically [to play two Platinum events in a row]. My knee injury is not 100 per cent so to play two tournaments back to back is very hard to recover in between but I’m trying my best.
“I’m working hard to recover and treat it and still doing everything I can to just finish the season. It’s going well, it’s not 100 per cent and I’m not playing normally and I still have some pain, but I’m playing good.”
Aumard said afterwards: “I’m happy with the way I played today, I took my chances when the opportunity was there. I respect Nour immensely, I think she is one of the players I respect the most, but I didn’t get on court beaten. I am happy I was able to express myself today.
“I thought that she was not as fast as normal to get to the front but my aim was to stay away from her volleying as much as possible, and that allowed me to build a few rallies and open a few chances.”
