Ali Farag celebrates after his win over Diego Elias

World Tour Finals: Farag Fights Past Elias In Hour Long Epic

World No.2 Ali Farag has booked his place in the semi-finals of the CIB PSA World Tour Finals after fighting back from behind to defeat Peru’s Diego Elias in an epic match that lasted more than an hour.

Neither player gave an inch in the opening exchanges, and the pair could not be separated for the majority of the 35 minute opening game, the longest game of the tournament so far. The Peruvian needed seven game balls before he eventually took the lead in the match, after some unbelievable squash between the pair.

He lost the first 16-14, but Farag fought back in the second. The pair were level at 5-5, but with the World No.6 starting to tire, the Egyptian saw his chance and he took it. He went on to take the next six points to wrap up the second game, sending the match into a decider.

The third would be much easier for the former World No.1, as Elias looked out on his feet in the humid conditions at the Mall of Arabia in Cairo. Farag allowed the Peruvian just three points in the final game, as he took control to secure his place in the semi-finals of the season-ending event.

“It was very hard and very tough conditions out there. Even when I was 10-8 down in the first, I thought maybe I should just put some work into his legs and it did finally pay off at 1-0 and 5-5,” he explained.

“From that point on, I took more control of the match. that was one gutsy performance. I didn’t necessarily play the best squash, but I was talking to my mum yesterday and she gave me the confidence that I have it in me. It is her birthday today tomorrow so I just want to send her a message!

“The crowd made a big difference today. We are lucky to have a lot of tournaments in Egypt, mostly thanks to CIB. Today I was really looking at my brother. Ever since I was very young, he was the guy I was looking up to and behind the glass, when he is here, he gets all my attention.”
