Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng made his way through to the last 16 of the PSA Platinum level Qatar Classic after overcoming the higher-ranked Englishman, Declan James, in straight games at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
The pair had only met once on the PSA World Tour before, with the Englishman having taken a 3-2 victory in the first round of the 2019 Grasshopper Cup in Zurich. James led for the early part of the match, and had game balls in the first, but the young Malaysian saved both, before taking the opener on his first attempt.
After winning the first on a tie-break, the 22-year-old ran out into a lead in the second game. ‘The Dark Knight’ fought back though and was able to level the game midway through. Once again, though, it was Ng that finished the stronger of the two, winning the last three points to take it 11-7.
James held a lead in the third, and for the most part, it looked like he would extend the match into a fourth game. However, a couple of crucial errors gave the Malaysian the advantage, one he kept hold of to seal the victory in straight games.
“It was a tough match against Dec. He is always consistent and it is hard to get him out of position. However, I have been training hard and I really believed in myself. I knew that my squash could be good enough to get me to through to the next round and I was just playing with confidence,” he explained.
“Once the tour was suspended, it would not be be possible to break in to the top 20. I just changed my mindset to just being good enough to beat the top 20. Just believing and training hard to achieve that target of beating guys in that top 20 mark.”
