CIB Black Ball Open RD2: Elias Axes Gaultier to Advance

Peru’s World No.7 Diego Elias is into the quarter finals of the CIB Black Ball Open following an 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 victory over former World No.1 Gregory Gaultier.

Elias had never claimed a victory over the ‘French General’ in their three previous encounters, but the 24-year-old produced a polished performance today to change that run of form.

A high quality first game saw both players showcasing accurate squash but on the last few points, Elias was able to move Gaultier around the court more to make the difference and find his opening to take the lead.

That tactic continued to work for Elias as he continued to test the movement of Gaultier in the remainder of the match to his advantage and got his shot selection right to close out in straight games against his training partner.

Up next for Elias will be either Karim Abdel Gawad or Fares Dessouky.

“I think it was a good match,” said Elias.

“We were unlucky to draw each other after training for three-four months together. In training he was playing really well, I think it’s unlucky for him that there are not many tournaments right now because I think he needs more matches. It’s different than playing practice matches, so I think it’s unlucky for him but in training, it is a different thing. I think when there are more tournaments and more chances to play, he will come back even stronger. He’s still improving after his injury, so I think he will be good next year.

“I don’t know what happened [with the ball]. In the middle of the second, it started to skid, I think it helped me a little bit because I noticed that he was getting a bit slower in his movements, so I was just trying to smash it.”
