Ivan Perez with the Open Squash Aguadulce winner's trophy

Open Squash Aguadulce: Perez Claims Maiden Challenger Victory

20-year-old Ivan Perez has secured his first title on the PSA Challenger Tour after he got the better of the tournament’s top seed at the Open Squash Aguadulce in Spain.

Like the majority of events on the Challenger Tour right now, there were limitations on who could enter, with only those residing in Spain being allowed to participate.

That meant that Hugo Varela, the World No.115, was the top seed, with Perez, the World No.175, his nearest challenger for the title in Mijas Costa at the weekend.

Perez got the better of Neil Maccarrow in the first round in a four-game battle, before winning by the same score-line against No.6 seed August Ortigosa in the quarter-finals of the Challenger 5 level event.

The World No.175 then downed No.3 seed Javier Martin in the last four before coming up against top seed Varela in the final. However, the man sixty places above Perez in the World Rankings was no match, with the 20-year-old winning in straight games to secure his first professional title.
