Val de Marne: Gomez Downs Top Two To Take Maiden Win

Spain’s Cristina Gomez has won the Codep94 Val de Marne International this weekend, overcoming the top two seeds in the event in the process, winning for the first time in her career.

The event was held in Creteil, under cross-border particiaptnio limits, meaning only those currently residing in Andorra, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain and Switzerland, along with host nation France, would be allowed to enter.

The Spaniard received a bye through to the second round due to being the No.4 seed for the event, before getting the better of Frenchwoman Mahe Asensi in just 17 minutes. She then defeated another home hope in Fanny Segers in the last eight.

Gomez, the World No.83, then took on Swiss No.2 Nadia Pfister in the semi-finals, and got the better of her opponent in straight games. She won in 22 minutes, despite being 14 places below Pfister in the World Rankings.

The Spanish No.1 then came up against the tournament’s top seed in the final, Latvia’s Ineta Mackevica. She had to come from behind twice to take the victory, defeating the World No.56 in a 51-minute final to claim her first title on the PSA Tour.
