Jessica Turnbull and Bryan Lim Tze Kang with the North Coast Open trophies

North Coast Open: Kang And Turnbull Victorious

Malaysia’s Bryan Lim Tze Kang and home hope Jessica Turnbull were crowned the victors at the North Coast Open in Coffs Harbour, Australia this weekend.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Challenger 3 level tournament was restricted to only those currently residing in home nation Australia and the neighbouring New Zealand.

Kang was one of three foreign players in the draw, and he caused several shocks en route to the men’s title, beating two of the top three seeds to claim the victory.

After defeating Lachlan Coxsedge in the opening round, the Malaysian then got the better of Jack Hudson to make it through to the semi-finals, where he came up against top seed Joseph White, who sits 41 places above him in the World Rankings.

Kang went 2-1 down in his last four clash, but fought back to win the last two games, making his way through to the final, where the No.4 seed would do battle against No.3 seed Nicholas Calvert.

Calvert had gotten the better of No.2 seed Rhys Dowling to also cause an upset in the semi-finals, and he led 2-1 in the final. However, the Malaysian fought back from a game down for the second day in a row to secure the victory at Coffs Harbour Squash and Swim Centre, claiming the first title of his career.

It was a slightly easier path through to victory for women’s champion Jessica Turnbull, who had a bye in the opening round, before getting the better of Maggy Marshall in straight games to reach the last four.

In the semis, she came up against No.3 seed Christine Nunn, winning 3-1, setting up a clash with Tamika Hunt, the event’s No.2 seed.

The final would swing both ways during it’s 49-minute tenure, with Turnbull taking both the first and third games to hold a lead in the match. Hunt forced the match into a decider, but it was the World No.66 that took the victory.

Turnbull secured her fifth victory on Tour, and her first since the Queensland Open in 2019. All five of her titles on the Challenger Tour have come on home soil.
