Sumner Malik Memorial: Fallows And Kennedy Take Titles

The English duo of Richie Fallows and Georgina Kennedy were victorious at the Sumner Malik Memorial in Crawley, England, this week.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament, which had a Challenger 10 level men’s event and Challenger 3 level women’s draw, was held with dfomestic entrants only, meaning only those based in the United Kingdom were allowed to participate.

Kennedy won the women’s title with consummate ease, coming through four matches without dropping a single game, starting with a 20-minute victory over Saran Nghiem.

The 24-year-old, who was featuring on the PSA Tour for the first time in five years, following a stint at university in the United States, then defeated Grace Clark and Torrie Malik to reach the final.

There, Kennedy came up against No.4 seed Grace Gear in the final, with her fellow Englishwoman having made the final after beating the tournament’s top seed. That made no difference to Kennedy, with the World No.170 winning in straight games to secure her first title on Tour.

The men’s draw saw top seed James Willstrop knocked out in the opening round, with the No.2 and No.3 seeds then assuming favourite status, with the pair both making it through to the final.

It would be Richie Fallows, the No.2 seed, who got the better of compatriot Ben Coleman to take the title, winning out in four games in the final, in a battle that lasted just over an hour.

To reach the final, Fallows started his campaign with a win against Tom Walsh, before downing No.7 seed Connor Sheen and Portugal’s Rui Soares, ahead of taking the title with a win against Coleman.
