Squash Quebec Open: DeLierre Excited To Test Body Again

The Squash Quebec Open begins later today at Club Atwater in Montreal, with the Challenger 5 tournament taking place over the next five days.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament is being run with domestic entry restrictions, allowing only those currently based in Canada to participate.

Two non-Canadians will be in action this week in Quebec, with Pakistan’s Rafi Khan and Bermudan Taylor Carrick both featuring in the tournament.

Apart from that, the rest of the 24-strong field hail from Canada, with three members of the top 100 in action. Michael McCue and David Baillargeon will both be in action, along with World No.82, and the tournament’s top seed, Shawn DeLierre.

The Canadian No.1 will be featuring on the PSA Tour for the first time since prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with his last tournament being the Assante Wealth Management Carter Classic back in Februrary 2020. DeLierre admits that he has used to break to his advantage.

“My game at the moment is actually pretty good. The year and a half off definitely helped my body recover from the many years on court. [I am] excited to put it to the test again injury free,” he explained.

“Once I realied the Tour wasn’t continuing, I worked on all the muscle groups that would give balance back to my body. Squash can make you lopsided so it was imperative to reconstruct.”

DeLierre is the top seed for the Challenger 5 event at Club Atwater, but after 18 months away from the professional game, he is not putting any pressure on himself to perform to his seeding.

At 39, the Canadian is also the oldest player currently inside the top 100, and he explained how he sees his near future in terms of continuing on the Tour.

“I feel no pressure, it would be unkind to do so because I am at a later stage and just happy to be out there able to play,” he said.

“I want to definitely play until the end of this year. After that I’ll make another assessment of what I’d like to do with squash.”

The event takes place from Sunday 29 August to Thursday 2 September at Club Atwater in Montreal, where Shawn DeLierre is the top seed for the tournament. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates from the event.
