Alison Thomson with the Gibraltar Open trophy

Gibraltar Open: Thomson Takes Maiden Title, Wall Win’s Mens Event

England’s Nick Wall and Scotland’s Alison Thomson have claimed the titles at the Gibraltar Open, with the Scot securing her maiden victory on the PSA Tour.

Both were the No.2 seeds for their respective events, with Thomson coming into the tournament looking for her first title as a professional. She started with a bye through to the last eight, where she then got the better of Germany’s Aylin Gunsav.

A win against England’s Anna Kimberley in the semis saw her through to the final, where she came up against Spain’s Marta Dominguez Fernandez, who had defeated the top seed to reach the final.

However, it would be the Scot that took the victory, winning the final after 44 tough minutes, claiming a straight games victory over the Spaniard to come through the tournament without dropping a single game. The win is Thomson’s first on Tour.

In the men’s draw, Nick Wall started his campaign against compatriot Hasnaat Farooqi in the first round, coming through in straight games. He then defeated Spain’s Aron Astray, also claiming the win in three.

Wall took on compatriot Simon Herbert in the semis, with the unseeded Englishman having already taken out two higher-ranked players in the event. However, it was the tournament’s No.2 seed that won in three to book his place in the final.

Like Thomson, Wall also came up against Spanish opposition in the final, in No.6 seed Ivan Perez. The Englishman was in control throughout, winning the final in 38 minutes to claim his first Tour title since winning in Las Vegas in 2019.
