Novum Energy Texas Open: Stewart Downs Todd To Win

Scotland’s Rory Stewart secured his fourth Challenger title of the year, with victory over England’s Sam Todd in the final of the Novum Energy Texas Open on Sunday evening.

The Challenger 10 event, which took place at the Downtown Club in Houston across five days of action, saw an international field, with Stewart as the No.4 seed for the tournament.

He started his campaign with a win England’s Tom Walsh, having received a bye through to the second round thanks to his seeding. He then got the better of Welshman Emyr Evans to make it into the last four.

Stewart took on New Zealand’s Lwamba Chileshe in the semi-finals, and it looked grim for the Scot after he lost the first game 11-1. However, he regrouped to take the next three games, the last of those going in his favour by the same scoreline, to set up a clash in the final with England’s Sam Todd.

The final was an epic five-gamer, with the first three all going to tie-breaks. The Englishman took two of those, including an incredible 19-17 third game, but after that Stewart showed his qualities, winning the next two games 11-5, 11-3 to secure his fourth title of the year.
