Aifa Azman in action

Azman Advances In Malaysian Open Round 1

Round one of the Malaysian Open Squash Championships have been completed at the National Squash centre in Kuala Lumpar.

Wildcard Afia Azman upset the seedings as she beat 9/16 seed Mayar Hany from Egypt. Azman has entered the event in great form, reaching four finals in her last four events, winning three of them. The World No.69 needed only 23 minutes to defeat the Egyptian.

With the top eight seeds now entering the tournament, Azman will face No.3 seed Yathreb Adel in the next round.

Defending champion Rachel Arnold has also successfully made it through to the second round. The 25-year-old defeated Hong Kong’s Tsz Wing Tong 3-1 in 32 minutes to advance. Arnold will now face No.7 seed Donna Lobban in the next round of 16.

The only seeding upset in the Men’s draw came from Egypt’s Mazen Gamal. The 35-year-old produced an impressive performance to get past USA No.2 Todd Harrity in an hour long 3-1 battle. Gamal has set up a second round match up with current World No.15 Saurav Ghosal.

Local favourite Ivan Yuen has set up an all Malaysian battle with No.3 seed Eain Yow Ng as he beats another Malaysian compatriot One Sai Hung in 51 minutes. With the Mens World Team Squash Championships coming up in December, a clash between Malaysia’s top two players is sure to excite the crowd.

Both top seeds also enter the draw in the round two. On the Womens side, Egypt’s Salma Hany will be in action against Ka Yi Lee from Hong Kong. Lee upset the seedings in round one as she overcame higher ranked Mariam Metwally 3-1.

Exciting Colombian Miguel Rodriguez is the No.1 seed in the men’s draw. After his recent Canary Wharf Classic quarter final appearance, Rodriguez will be hoping to go further in this event. In his first match he takes on Japan’s Ryosei Kobayashi, who will be hoping to take a giant scalp against the ‘Colombian Cannonball’.
