Aifa Azman in action

Wildcard Azman Through To Final Four

Malaysian teenage sensation Aifa Azman has once again upset the seedings as she moves into the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open Squash Championships 2021.

The Women’s wildcard has beaten Egypt’s Hana Ramadan 3-0 to reach the final four. Azman held on well in the first two games winning them both 11-9 before finishing strongly in the third to take the game 11-5 and advance to the next round.

Azman will come up against another surprise semi-finalist, Danielle Letourneau. The recently crowned Canadian National Champion downed No.2 seed Nadine Shahin from Egypt in a tough four games. Letourneau reversed the result from when the pair met in last year’s Manchester Open in which Shahin came out on top 3-1.

Defending champion Rachel Arnold put up a good fight to keep her title defence alive but wasn’t able to get past No.1 seed Salma Hany from Egypt. The World No.8 was pushed all the way to five games and managed to defeat the defending champion 11-6 in the fifth game. Hany will now face No.4 seed Hollie Naughton in the semi-finals. Naughton defeated Hong Kong’s The Lok Ho 3-1 in 37 minutes.

There were no seeding upsets in the Men’s draw however as all higher seeds made it through to the semi-finals in comfortable fashion.

No.3 seed Eain Yow Ng carries home hopes as the only Malaysian left in the draw. The World No. 18 only needed 25 minutes to defeat Swiss No.1 Nicolas Mueller to advance to the semi-finals at the National Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Yow has set up an exciting clash with ‘Colombian Cannonball’ Miguel Rodriguez. Rodriguez was in top form as he comfortably beat USA’s Shahjahan Khan in a 34 minute 3-0.

The second Men’s semi-final will be between No.2 seed Saurav Ghosal from India and France’s Victor Crouin. Both players recorded 3-0 victories in their quarter finals beating Tsz Fung Yip from Hong Kong and France’s Lucas Serme respectively.
