Cesar Salazar in action

Wildcard Salazar Books Second Round Slot in Detroit

The first round of the Sturbridge Capital Motor City Open got under way last night from the Birmingham Athletic Club with plenty of upsets entertaining the Detroit crowd.

Wildcard Cesar Salazar defeated France’s Lucas Serme 3-0 in 39 minutes to secure his second round place. The Mexican reached a highest World Ranking of No.17 in 2017 but due to injury issues has seen his ranking slip to No.75 but starting his campaign strongly at the PSA World Tour Silver event should help him climb back up the men’s rankings.

There were more upsets to follow in round one as England’s World No.28 Patrick Rooney fell to France’s World No.41 Sebastien Bonmalais in a thrilling 3-0 encounter, with the second game going all the way to 17-15 as the Frenchman saw out the win. He will face No.2 seed and former World Champion Tarek Momen in round two.

Elsewhere, England’s Nathan Lake repeated his Houston Open victory over USA’s Shahjahan Khan. Lake won 3-0 in just 35 minutes to book his place in round two where he will face defending champion Diego Elias. Lake will be joined in round two by compatriots Adrian Waller and George Parker.

World No.32 Parker was a comfortable winner against Arturo Salazar whilst Waller was pushed all the way to five games by speedy Swiss Dimitri Steinmann, eventually winning 11-3 in the fifth game in 68 minutes. Waller and Parker will now play Egyptian duo Marwan ElShorbagy and Karim Abdel Gawad respectively.

There was further European success to come during the day’s play as Spain’s Borja Golan rolled back the years to end home hopes in the event, beating Todd Harrity 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 in 38 minutes and set up a day two meeting with Malaysian No.1 Eain Yow Ng.

In arguably the match of the day, ‘Hammer Of Thor’ Omar Mosaad battled back from 2-0 down against Ivan Yuen to win 3-2 in just over an hour. The Malaysian ran out to the perfect start winning two tight first games 11-9 and 12-10. But the experienced Egyptian showed his quality and skill to remain calm and pile the pressure on Yuen and comfortably won the next three games 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 to complete the comeback and set up a second round match with compatriot Fares Dessouky.

Day two action will start from 17:00 (GMT-5) from Detroit.

The Motor City Open will be broadcast live on Youtube.
