3rd Silvester Trophy QF: Seeds Continue To Fall in Switzerland

Another day in Uster, and another day where seeds fell at the 3rd Silvester Trophy, with four seedings upsets coming across the quarter finals of the men’s and women’s Challenger 5 level event.

None of the top four seeds have made it into the semi-finals of the men’s draw, with Robert Downer and Robin Gadola, the No.1 and No.3 seed, having been dumped out on Friday. In Saturday’s last eight matches, it was the Chileshe brothers that were beaten.

Italian No.1, and the tournament’s No.5 seed, Yuri Farneti, secured a four-game victory over the No.2 seed, Lwamba Chileshe, winning a fourth game tie-break 14-12 to seal his spot in the last four. He will face the Czech Republic’s Marek Panacek in the semis, after he got the better of younger brother Temwa Chileshe, in a tight five-game clash that lasted for more than 70 minutes.

There will be English representation in the final, as the other semi-final in the men’s draw will see No.9 seed Simon Herbert and No.10 seed Stuart MacGregor battle it out, after they got the better of Spain’s Nilo Vidal and New Zealand’s Joel Arscott, respectively.

It was the No.2 and No.4 seeds that were dumped out of the women’s draw in the quarter finals as well, and both in matches with compatriots. No.5 seed Celine Walser is the only Swiss player left in the tournament on home soil, after she defeated No.2 seed, and fellow countrywoman, Nadia Pfister inside half an hour.

Walser will now face No.6 seed Anna Kimberley in the semis, after the Englishwoman overcame compatriot and No.4 seed Alicia Mead in four games to book her spot in the semi-finals. The other last four contest will also guarantee English representation in the final, as top seed Lily Taylor will face No.3 seed Lucy Beecroft on Sunday.

The semi-finals will take place on the glass court at Squash Arena Uster on Sunday, February 20, with the eight remaining players doing battle for places in their respective finals, which will be held on Monday, February 21.
