Guatemala Open Tournament: Avila Claims 14th Tour Title

Mexico’s Alfredo Avila claimed his 14h title on Tour with a victory at the 1st Guatemala Open Squash PSA Tournament this weekend, dropping just a single game en route to the victory.

The World No.87 came into the tournament as the top seed and received a bye through the opening round. He then started his campaign with a straight games victory over England’s Charlie Lee, winning 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 in 39 minutes to advance to the quarter finals.

In the last eight, the Mexican defeated Brazil’s Diego Gobbi 3-0, before going on to get the better of England’s Tom Walsh, the tournament’s No.4 seed, in the semis. He dropped the first game against the Englishman, but then went on to win the next three, dropping just 12 points, to take a 3-1 victory.

Avila came up against home hope Alejandro Enriquez in the final, after the Guatemalan had gotten the better of No.2 seed Ronald Palomino in the last four. There would be no surprise win on home soil, as the Mexican put in a professional performance to win 11-1, 11-5, 11-6 in 31 minutes.
