2nd Guatemala Open Tournament Men’s RD1: Guatemalan Duo Through First Round

The first round of the men’s event at the 2nd Guatemala Open Squash PSA Tournament got underway on Tuesday, and once again, a couple of home hopes have made it through the opening day’s play.

Alejandro Enriquez, who was last week’s surprise package as he went all the way to the final, was perhaps an unsurprising winner on the first day of this week’s tournament. He overcame Pakistan’s Ahsan Ayaz in straight games, including a third game tie-break, to advance to the last 16 of the competition, where he will face Colombia’s Ronald Palomino, the man he beat in the semi-finals last week.

Josue Enriquez was the other Guatemalan to make it through to the second round of the Challenger 10 level men’s draw, as he defeated Colombia’s Andres Herrera in a four-game battle that lasted just under an hour. The pair were level after two games, but the home hope was able to fight through to win the next two games, securing his spot in the next round, where he will face Canadian Nick Sachvie.

Mexico’s Alejandro Reyes also caused an upset on the first day in Guatemala, as he got the better of compatriot Miled Zarazua. Reyes took the victory over his fellow countryman in just 32 minutes, and he will now face last week’s winner, and fellow Mexican, Alfredo Avila, in the last 16.

Elsewhere on the opening day of the competition, there were wins for Brazil’s Diego Gobbi, Colombia’s Edgar Ramirez Bautista, England’s Charlie Lee, Frenchman Toufik Mekhalfi and Australia’s Joseph White, with the latter facing top seed Arturo Salazar in the second round.

The second round of the men’s event continues on Wednesday, March 2 with the seeded players entering the competition. The women’s Challenger 5 level event will also get underway as well, with four first round matches at the same venue.
