DHA Islamabad Championship QF: Idrakie Breaks Pakistani Stranglehold

Malaysia’s Addeen Idrakie is through to the semi-finals of the DHA Islamabad International Squash Championship, as the only non-Pakistani player to make it into the last four of the competition.

The Challenger 10 level tournament is taking place at the JFC Squash Courts in Islamabad, with the majority of the field hailing from the host nation. There were four Pakistanis in the last eight of the event, with three of those making it through to the quarter finals.

Idrakie, the No.4 seed, will be the only non-Pakistani in the last four, after he defeated Egypt’s No.7 seed Yassin Elshafei in a four-game battle on Monday afternoon. After winning the first two games comfortably, the Malaysian then saw his opponent fight back to win the third. However, he went on to win in four to book his spot in the semis.

He will face the only unseeded player left in the draw, in Pakistan’s Noor Zaman, after he defeated Frenchman Edwin Clain in a five-game battle, coming from behind to win in 50 minutes. He found himself two games down, but was able to fight back, and it went to a tie-break in the fifth, and he took it 12-10 to book his spot in the last four.

The other semi-final will see top seed Asim Khan take on compatriot Israr Ahmed, the No.5 seed, for a place in the final, after they both won their respective last eight clashes in straight games on Monday afternoon.

The semis of the DHA Islamabad International Squash Championship will be played at the JFC Squash Courts on Tuesday, March 29.
