BRESS Breda Open RD1: Long Downs Top Seed In First Round

There was a big surprise in the opening round of the BRESS Breda Open on Thursday, as Hong Kong’s Chung Yat Long overcame top seed Joeri Hapers in a five-game battle, coming back from a game down to take the win.

The World No.221 found himself 2-1 down after the Belgian had taken the third game in convincing fashion. However from there, it was Long who took control of the contest, going on to win both the fourth and fifth games to take the victory in just under an hour, and move through to the second round.

The Hongkonger will now face Dutch No.1 Roshan Bharos in the last eight of the competition, after he had to fight his way past Wailok To in his opening match. Bharos lost the first game on a tie-break, before winning the next two games with the loss of just four points. Another tie-break loss saw the match go into a decider, but it was the Dutchman who came through, winning in 72 minutes in the last contest of the opening day.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia Pollan, the No.2 seed, came through the longest match of the day, as he needed to go the distance to defeat Ireland’s Conor Moran. The first game tie-break, which went the way. Of the Irishman, went all the way to 18-16, but it was eventually the Spaniard who took the win, after 77 minutes of action.

The Brits trio of England’s Ben Smith, and Scotland’s Alasdair Prott and Fergus Richards, all made it through to the last eight as well, and will be joined in Friday’s quarter finals by Ukrainian No.1 Valeriy Fedoruk and Ireland’s Sam Buckley.

The quarters will take place at the BRESS Breda Sportcenter in the Netherlands on Friday, April 8, with the winners of those four matches advancing to the semis of the competition.
