Hugo Varela has been on the Tour since 2010, but broke into the world’s top 100 for the first time in late 2021.
The Spaniard’s first appearance in a main draw came at the XIII Open Internacional D’Squash Esportiu Rocafort-San Anton, but he had to wait until 2014 before he made the semi-finals of an event for the first time, reaching the last four at the Caldense International Squash Championship.
He then had to wait a further six years before he made his first final on Tour, with a string of semi-final and last eight appearances coming in that time, including making the semis of the Costa Del Sol Open in 2020, his first appearance on Tour after it returned from its six-month suspension due to COVID-19.
Varela’s first final came at the Open Federation Espanola, and he took the win, beating Ivan Perez in the final to claim his first victory after 11 years on Tour. He then finished runner-up at the Open Squash Aguadulce to the same opponent, but would go on to claim his second victory later in 2021.
After quarter final results at the Gibraltar Open and the Open PSA Lagord Tennis Squash, Varela downed England’s Tom Walsh to won on home soil once more, victorious at the Open Costa Del Sol, and thanks to that result, he moved inside the top 100 of the World Rankings for the first time in his career.
