Fares Dessouky is one of Egypt’s rising stars and has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the PSA World Rankings in recent years.
Dessouky turned professional in 2011 and amassed his first PSA World Tour title at the NSA Open after a tense final against Raphael Kandra.
The Alexandrian-born Egyptian’s performances at PSA World Series events throughout 2014 have brought him widespread recognition as one to watch in the coming years.
His best performances came at the British Open in May 2014 when he stunned compatriots Karim Abdel Gawad and Karim Darwish en-route to the quarter-final where he was defeated by runner-up Nick Matthew.
A quarter-final finish at the US Open followed and that lead to Dessouky breaking into the top 25 in the world for the first time. He then made it to the third round of the World Championship in November 2014.
Dessouky made further progress up the world rankings in 2015, thanks in part to quarter-final finishes at the Canary Wharf Classic in March and the Sharm El Sheikh International Championship two months later.
May 2015 was arguably one of the finest months of his career as he entered the world's top 20 for the first time in addition to being named the PSA Men's Young Player of the Year.
Dessouky reached a third PSA World Tour final at the Macau Open in September of that year but couldn’t find a way by Max Lee.
He would have to wait 14 months for his next final appearance, where he defeated compatriot Mohamed Abouelghar in the final of the CCI International to capture his second, and biggest, Tour crown.
Dessouky missed out on claiming a third PSA World Tour title during the 2016/17 season when he fell to England’s Nick Matthew in the final of the Canary Wharf Classic.
The Egyptian suffered a torn ACL in the autumn of 2017, and spent 14 months away from the game as he recovered. He finished runner-up in his first tournament back from injury, losing out to Tarek Momen in the final of the CCI International.
Dessouky continued to make at least the last 16 of every event to the end of the 2018-19 campaign, including a quarter final appearance at the Canary Wharf Classic. He also made the semi-finals of the El Gouna International, becoming the first wildcard to do so at a Platinum event.
