Rui Soares is the leading Portuguese player on Tour, and has shown himself to be a consistent performer on the Challenger Tour.
Soares made his debut on Tour in 2013, but his form really started to kick on three years later, as he reached his first final as a professional at the Austrian Open. He also reached the semis of the Open du Gard, Jersey Squash Classic, Pacific Toyota Cairns Squash International and Airport Xmas Challenger that year.
Further last four appearances came at the Atlanta Open and Contrex Challenge Cup in 2018, and since reaching the semis of the BTMI Barbados Open that year, Soares has only failed to reach the last eight of an event on three occasions, in a run of 20 tournaments.
Soares reached the final of the Select Gaming - Colin Payne Kent Open at the start of 2019, and a couple of months later, he won for the first time on Tour, taking victory at the Hampshire Open. The Portuguese No.1 made it into another final that year, doing so at the Life Time Mississauga Open.
He reached five more semi-finals over the next twelve months, including at the International tournament Madeira Island, Airport Squash & Fitness Xmas Challenger and the Linear Logistics Bankers Hall Club Pro Am.
Soares started 2021 in a great vein of form, reaching the semis of the Sumner Malik Memorial before taking his second Tour victory at the Arion Homes Off the Wall Squash Open. His third followed shortly after, as he defeated Curtis Malik in the final of the Hit and Run Sport Challenger.
The Portuguese No.1 reached three more finals over the course of 2021, making it to the final of the TWC Squash Squared Open, Madeira International and Swiss Open & Uster Cup before the year’s end. He also made history by becoming the first Portuguese player to win a match at a Platinum event, as he made it into the second round of the Qatar QTerminals Classic.
