Lisa Aitken has established herself twice as Scotland’s best female player, with a bout of dengue fever breaking her career into two distinct parts. She came onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 2007, and made her first quarter final in just her second tournament. The Iran Open was the tournament, before she reached the same stage of Le Sport Open in 2008.
2011 was a breakout year for the Scot, who spent most of her time in Australia. She made the last eight in eight tournaments, including semi final appearances in the Tasmanian Open, and the London Open. Aitken also reached the final of the Santiago Open, where she was defeated by Birgit Coufal.
The Scot then made the semi finals of both the Crocodile Challenge Cup and Wells & Young Wimbledon Cup in 2012, with her next final appearance coming in the Paderborn in 2014. However, later that year, Aitken contracted dengue fever after being bitten by a mosquito while she was competing in the Malaysian Open. She spent over two years out the game, as she struggled to regain fitness after the disease.
She came back with a bang, though, making he last four of the first three tournaments on her return. In one of those, she went all the way to the final, where she was beaten by Milou van der Heijden in the Jersey Squash Classic. Aitken took her first PSA Tour title at the Fitzherbet Rowe Lawyers NZ International Classic in 2017, beating Emma Millar in the final. She claimed her second title at the PwC Ladies Open later that year.
The Scot then won three more tournaments in 2018, as she took home the trophies of the Karakal Bangor Classic, Internazionali D’Italia and the Remoe Ladies Open. Aitken also won the CSC Delaware Open in her second outing of 2019, as she moved back inside the top 50 for the first time since in over four years.
The Scot also reached the last 16 of the Cleveland Classic and then made the same stage of the Open de France - Nantes presented by Tailor Capital in her first appearance of the 2019/2020 campaign. Aitken also recorded a last eight result at the Edinburgh Sports Club Open on home soil.
