Overview

The 2015 Delaware Investments US Open, PSA World Series event gets underway at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletics Center on Saturday October 10 in what will be the latest instalment of one of the PSA World Tour’s most prestigious tournaments.

First contested on New Year’s day in 1954 as a hardball competition, before changing to the more familiar softball squash to which modern day audiences are accustomed to in 1985, the US Open has maintained it’s reputation as one of the marquee events on the North American squash calendar throughout an illustrious sixty years.

The first player to win the tournament in the modern format was the legendary Jahangir Khan, who defeated Ross Norman 3-0 in a thrilling final, whilst the names of squash luminaries such as Amr Shabana, David Palmer, Peter Nicol, Jonathan Power are among those that adorn the iconic trophy.

After being held in various well-respected locations such as Chicago and Boston, the tournament moved to Philadelphia in 2011, where it has stayed ever since, after securing a ten-year agreement with Drexel University in a significant moment in history of the event and in US Squash.

Today, the US Open holds a deserved reputation as a pioneering PSA World Series after becoming the first PSA World Series event to offer equal prize money across both the Men’s and Women’s draws in 2013 – with their commitment to gender equality continuing through this year.

Last year’s Men’s event saw World No.1 Mohamed Elshorbagy emerge victorious with a 3-1 triumph over the recently retired ‘Maestro’ Amr Shabana while Malaysian superstar Nicol David bested Nour El Sherbini to lift the Women’s title for the third consecutive year.
