Overview

Jan Koukal has became the joint third most successful player on the PSA World Tour by taking a second consecutive title at the Madeira International Open Squash, PSA M5 event – beating George Parker in the final.

Koukal, who claimed the 3rd Open Squash Provence Chateau-Arnoux crown earlier this month, secured his final passage after a gargantuan win over Lyell Fuller in the previous round. Meanwhile, Parker stunned top seed Alejandro Garbi Caro to progress to his third PSA World Tour final in a row.

Leicester-born Parker started brilliantly and stormed to victory in the opening game before Koukal halted his momentum with an excellent display in the second.

Koukal took the third as well after an error-strewn game from Parker. The usually consistent number three seed struggled to match his Czech opponent’s game plan and gifted him a number of points to give Koukal the advantage heading into the fourth game.

World No.148 Koukal upped his game further and climbed to a 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 victory to take his 33rd PSA World Tour title, matching Nick Matthew and Amr Shabana in the process. He sits behind just Mike Corren (50) and Ramy Ashour (36) in the list of all-time winners.

“It was my first time playing in Madeira so it feels extra special to win here,” said a delighted Koukal.

“It was a really tough match, especially after playing my semi final against Lyell [Fuller] earlier in the day. George started really well and put me under a lot of pressure. He actually surprised me with the way he was playing so it took me a couple of games to adapt and change my strategy.

“I didn’t feel very sharp in the first game but I started moving a lot better in the second and I managed to control the rest of the match. I know George is desperate to win his first title but he is still young and will have plenty of chances in the future. He deserves a big congratulations for reaching the final because he caused a huge upset beating the top seed [Alejandro Garbi Caro] in the semi final.”
